Phonics is an important part of the school’s curriculum. Converting letters to recognizable print can be taught through phonics instruction and can lead to students comprehending the meaning of text. Phonics is an approach in which children are taught to decode words by using and applying their knowledge of the relationship between letters and individual sounds to read. In planning phonics instruction you will have to decide among several forms of phonics instruction. All the approaches include instruction in letter-sound relationships but vary in the explicitness of the instruction and how organized the process is in determining the sequence of instruction. Other students would also have difficulty with spelling. Having phonics skill enables childre n to use letter-sound correspondences to read and spell words. For example, children segment the phonemes of a word to invent a spelling by assigning letters to represent its sounds. Children have to blend sounds together when they use letter-sound correspondences to read words they have never before seen. The challenges presented by the students also brought challenges to the correction of papers. Especially during exams extra time consumption was a major problem since checking the papers was difficult in finding out what students wanted to say or share. The researcher also found it very tiring to sit and check what students wanted to say in their reading. The challenges made the researcher find interest in the topic and find out the effects of teaching phonics to student in lower primary level of the urban area of the Cayo District.
